Okay let's be honest. The average Joe does not feel like experiencing long bouts of vigorous training day after day after day. Consistency is great when you're fighting to achieve your fitness goals, but it doesn't always have to be accomplished in the gym. Fitness should always be challenging, but most people don't realize that it can and should be fun. So you're probably thinking, "What the hell is fun about exercise?", or maybe your not. Either way, I'm going to tell you some fun things I like to do that are fun and burn some serious calories.
Have you ever tried hiking? If not, then you definitely should. Hiking is indisputably a total body exercise that especially challenges your legs. The best thing about hiking is that you don't have to pay for any gym memberships, training sessions, or extra gear. Throw on whatever you would consider good hiking clothes and some old shoes, and go for an adventurous day hike with some friends.
If hiking isn't your forte, then grab a bike (road bike or mountain bike) and go for a ride with your significant other, friends, or simply by yourself. It's a great way to clear your mind and explore some local trails. Not to mention, biking has a serious after-burn effect on the body. When you make your way back home from a nice ride, you'll still be burning calories for hours to come.
One thing people take for granted is the local rec center. I don't necessarily partake in your average pickup basketball games (because I am trash at the sport), but I've actually played in a couple of flag football leagues. This was one of my favorite things to do, because you don't realize how much good you are doing for your body while having fun. There's nothing wrong with a little competition during the fat burning process.
These few things are just a minuscule portion of the huge list of things you can do. Find out what you like to do and keep at it. Don't stop the grind in the gym, but don't stop having fun while achieving your fitness goals either. Keep it interesting!
